Portland, Maine In A Day

Portland, Maine In A Day

One thing I love about being a pilot’s wife, is that you can go on what we call “skydates”. When my pilot, Holly, gets a long overnight, she will take me with her to spend the day at someplace new, or just one of my favorite places. This skydate was Portland, Maine. We had the entire day, so what does a couple do in Portland Maine for a day? Make a good plan.

We knew we wanted to do a quick boat excursion to see the island, get a great lobster meal and do some local shopping. We first went over to the Portland Discovery Land & Sea Tours booth, located on the harbor. It was  important to figure out when the boats were heading out and how each tour lasted. This needed to be booked first before lobsters and gift shops. We booked the 90 minute Lighthouse Lovers Cruise. It was just enough time to see the harbor and sights before venturing off for a meal.

It was a wonderful trip. The Lighthouse Lovers Cruise was a pleasant narrated cruise about the famous lighthouses in the area along with sea birds and seals too! We were fortunate to catch some seals hanging out near a big rock in the harbor. It was a beautiful sunny day, the water was nice and calm for the most part.

After our wonderful cruise on the harbor, it was time for lunch before some shopping. We went to the famous Portland Lobster Company. There was a live band there and we sat outside, feeling the nice breeze on our faces. Great hang out spot….music, the sea, and lobster!

Even if you are gluten intolerant, lobster is always a great alternative to a crab cake! I heard the lobster roll was really good, I could have taken the bun off, but I needed a full lobster lunch. It was a special skydate, I had to go all out! So when in town, stop by Portland Lobster Company, located right on the harbor. As soon as we got off our little cruise, we walked several yards to the restaurant.

I am a lover of souvenier shopping whenever I travel. I recently bought a sterling silver charm bracelet so I can collect charms from all of our adventures. I got a lobster charm at this Shipwreck & Cargo giftshop. I try to find gift shops that carry unique items that represent the place I am visiting. You will never find me at an outlet store or chain store on vacation. I also enjoy buying from local crafters and artists too. I purchased a beach glass necklace from a street artist who collects beach glass right on the island. I enjoyed chatting about her island home and how she makes her jewelry.

Being gluten intolerant definitely has set backs to it, but I was super happy to find this delicious gluten free bakery Bam Bam Bakery. I bought some yummy baked items to take home. They were kind enough to double wrap everything for me to take it back on the plane.

It was facinating to find a piece of the Berlin Wall by the harbor. We enoyed some great photos and being able to touch a piece of history.

It was also fun to see the Love Locks! Thousands of locks adorn the fence along the harbor. Lovers make a wish and put a lock on the fence.

My favorite lock was this elephant one! Must have been hard to part with that one! When we went, there was yellow tape in front of it, rumor has it that the Love Locks may be taken down. Not sure, but if you go to Portland Maine, check it out! Great photo ops! Wow, each lock tells a story!

So there you have it! Portland Maine in one day:

  • Figure out the amount of time you have (including time to get things at hotel & head to airport)
  • Check out excursions or a possible tour you wish to do (keep time in mind)
  • Decide place to eat before or after excursion/tour
  • Leave time for shopping and walking around town

Portland Maine in a day! It was absolutely wonderful and there is nothing I love more than skydates with my pilot!

Make everyday a new adventure!
